The JD Welsh Cup might be taking centre stage this weekend, but there’s one league match going ahead in the JD Cymru Premier on Saturday and it could potentially be a significant game in the race for the Top Six.

Saturday, 19 February

Newtown (3rd) v Cardiff Met (8th) | Saturday – 14:30

Last Saturday, Ryan Sears scored a 95th minute for Newtown against Cardiff Met to secure the Robins’ place in the Top Six, subsequently lowering the students’ chances of reaching the top half.

Newtown will be relieved to have finally sealed their place in the Top Six having gone three games without a win following the break over Christmas.

With two games left, mathematically Cardiff Met still have an outside chance of getting into the top half, but the students will be aware that 6th placed Connah’s Quay are facing a possible 18-point deduction (pending appeal), which would then open the door for the 7th placed side.

A win for Cardiff Met on Saturday would leave them level on points with Caernarfon Town in 7th spot before the last game of phase one next Saturday.

Cardiff Met lost four league games on the bounce in November, but the Archers have now gone six league games without defeat and are dreaming of getting into the Top Six for the first time since 2017/18.

League form:

Newtown: ✅✅➖❌➖

Cardiff Met: ͏➖✅➖➖

Highlights will be available on Sgorio’s online accounts.
