Wrexham and Farnborough meet for the first time in their history as the second round of the FA Cup gets underway. Will we see an upset on the Racecourse on Saturday afternoon?

After defeating Oldham by three goals to nil in the last round, Wrexham now face National League South side Farnborough in the second round.

Phil Parkinson’s men will be hoping to reach the third round of the competition for the first time since the 2014/15 season, but a tough test against a defensively sound Borough awaits the Dragons first.

Wrexham’s home record in the National League has been fantastic this season with ten wins from ten, it’s a similar story in the FA Cup thus far as well with two wins from two.

The home side go into Saturday’s game with great confidence, sitting at the top of the National League and looking solid in defence having only conceded once in November in all competitions.

Paul Mullin is Wrexham’s top scorer in the FA Cup thus far with three goals to his name, including two in the last round against Oldham.

Despite their very slow start to the league campaign, Farnborough are now in fantastic form and will also be confident going into the game. Spencer Day’s side have looked solid defensively in recent weeks and boast one of the best defensive records in National League South only conceding an average of a goal a game.

The Yellow’s problem in the league has been at the other end of the pitch where they struggle to find the net, but they will take comfort from the fact that their FA Cup scoring record has been totally the opposite. In fact, they have scored more goals in their previous five FA Cup games than all of their 17 league matches this season.

Wrexham will know all about the threat that Farnborough possess. They knocked out League Two side Sutton United in the last round by two goals to nil, this was played away from home which makes the result even more impressive.

Farnborough have only made it to this stage of the FA Cup twice in their history, and on both occasions progressed into the third round, beating Torquay and Southport respectively.

There is no doubt that the home side’s priority this season will be promotion from the National League, and it is already shaping up to be an exciting title race with Notts County hot on the Dragons tail.

It will be interesting to see whether Parkinson will give an opportunity to players who need more game time or if he sticks with his strongest squad to give the best chance of winning the game.
