Shrewsbury Town and Wrexham AFC will meet for the first time in nearly 16 years on Sunday as both clubs look to progress into the Fourth Round of the Emirates FA Cup.
It was Shrewsbury that came out on top that all those years ago with a comfortable 3-0 victory with the clubs then taking different paths, Salop having a successful seven-year period in League One whilst the Red Dragons were relegated from the Football League in 2008 and spent 15 seasons in non-league before gaining promotion to League Two last season.
The home side have had to come through a couple of very tough fixtures to get to this stage. In the First Round they overcame Colchester by three goals to two before securing an away win against last year’s National League runners-up, Notts County in Round Two.
Wrexham were narrow winners in front of the S4C cameras against fellow League Two highflyers, Mansfield Town in Round One, before a far more comfortable affair at The Racecourse as they knocked three past Yeovil Town in the second round.
Shrewsbury come into the game after a disappointing Christmas period that saw four defeats in five matches but secured a 3-1 home win against bottom side Fleetwood Town in their first game of the New Year. Matthew Taylor’s side are currently mid-table in League One.
Phil Parkinson’s men had a very successful Christmas period winning three of their four games which now sees them in third place level on points with second place Mansfield and only two points behind leaders Stockport County with a game in hand.
Shrewsbury were dumped in the third round last season after a home defeat at the hands of Sunderland.
The Red Dragons had a great cup run, beating Championship side Coventry City in a seven goal thriller before narrowly losing out to Sheffield United after forcing a replay in the fourth round. Wrexham star Paul Mullin ended the FA Cup campaign as the competition’s top scorer with eight (8) goals.
It’s expected to be a sell out at Croud Meadow on Sunday for this hotly anticipated derby match!
Coverage begins on S4C from 1.30 with kick off at 2. Highlights will also be available on Sgorio’s social platforms following the match.
